Hi everyone, finals weekend finished in the under floodlights with myself and Trevor wondering if we would have time for a final set in the Mixed Doubles! It was not the weather that drove us to the brink but the quality of the matches. So many closely fought three setters with many multi-deuce games and long tough rallies.
The standard the juniors set was fantastic. From the 8 year old singles upwards. Highlights for me were the U14 girls and the U12 boys. Such great hitting from such young players. Fantastic!
However any juniors around for the men’s singles could have whiplash watching John and Adam slug out their match. Some times you thought they couldn’t hit it any harder and then a ferocious winner would be unleashed.
I would like to say thank you to all those willing hands who made the weekend a success. To the junior coaching team for producing such a fine set of young players. To the very professional ball boys and girls who worked their socks off in the sun. To the bar staff who provided refreshments and banter throughout the weekend. To the, mainly girls, in the kitchen, preparing, setting out and clearing up the teas. To the people who contributed cakes and sandwiches. To the early morning cooks who provided Martin with adequate supplies of bacon rolls. A very difficult target to hit!
A huge thank you from me for all those who umpired a game. Especially again Martin who did the final match when everyone was too exhausted.
A big thank you to all the people who drove the BBQ through to a great success and helped the club by drinking through until after midnight and causing a surprised Mr Ripton (who had turned up Sunday morning for social!!!) to have to restock all the shelves and worry about stocks for Sunday!
Also to all those invisible helpers who helped put things out, put them back, picked up glasses, bottles, plates and cans and the myriad of other jobs.
And Mel sends a special thanks to all those who put money over the bar. Another fine effort by that dedicated band.
And another special thanks to all the mum’s who watched their children, young and old, battle to success or disappointment. No matter how old they get it doesn’t get easier. Ask Janet and Debbie.
See you all next year. |
