The finals day started with the Mixed Doubles, the Langridge Cup. The holders Michelle Caldon & Kevin Eley were up against Maria Baker & Peter McQuibban. With the sun shining Martin Paterson took the umpire’s chair. Kevin & Michelle won the toss and elected to receive first, Peter saved one break point but conceded the next to set the pattern for the 1st set and, despite forcing 7 deuces overall, Maria & Peter lost the set 6-0. In the 2nd set Maria & Peter used their great doubles experience to make it a much closer contest, but eventually at 5-4 Kevin held serve to win the match.
Next was the Ladies Doubles, the Shirley Young Cup. This year the line up was Michelle Caldon & Keely Herring against Kate Bennett & Hannah Thomas. Alan Young was in the chair. Michelle was broken in the 1st game after 4 deuces and Kate held to go 2 up. After another break each, Kate & Hannah held on to their advantage to take the set 6-4. The 2nd set was a close affair and went to a tie break. Kate & Hannah actually had a match point but a rare double fault by Hannah let Michelle & Keely off the hook and they then took the set. The final set saw Michelle & Keely play with more accuracy and power, and at 3-5 Kate lost her serve, after 3 deuces, to lose the set and match 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), 3-6.
The final match was the Mens Doubles, the John Trigwell Cup. This was an intriguing line up with Greg MacDonald & Duncan Smith up against Andrew Bickell & Kevin Eley. Roy Bickell was in the chair. The 1st set was dominated by serve but there were many great rallies and powerful ground strokes. Then Greg was broken to love to go 3-5 down and Kevin held serve to love to take the 1st set 6-3. Andrew & Kevin dominated the 2nd set but then Andrew was broken when serving for the match at 5-2. However, Duncan was immediately broken to lose the set and match 3-6, 3-6. It was a great match and the spectators witnessed an excellent display by both pairs with impressive volleys and angles. |
